Beautiful stormy-blue iolite, in polished rounds and faceted puff coins, interspersed with textured mixed metal heishi beads. Named after the mystical selkies of Scottish lore; similar to mermaids, selkies are mythological creatures of the sea who can shapeshift from seal form whilst living in the sea to human form on land. Featuring prominently in Celtic and Norse lore, selkies (or "seal folk") could be friendly and helpful to humans, but also be dangerous and vengeful. Often depicted as attractive and seductive in their human form, there are many stories involving selkies having romantic or sexual relationships with humans. This wrap bracelet, which can also be worn as a necklace, invokes that mysterious and seductive nature of the selkie.
About Iolite
The word iolite comes from the Greek root "ios," meaning violet. Indeed, iolite’s rich hues evoke the ocean’s myriad moods from sunny to stormy… its moody purples, clear blues, and stormy cloudy qualities have earned it the nickname of water sapphire. Referred to as the Viking's compass since ancient times, iolite talismans have been used for centuries. This gemstone can polarize light, which helped Viking sailors navigate when the sun was hidden by clouds; use of an iolite lens enabled them to determine the position of the sun even on overcast days, making it possible for them to navigate longer and further than before. This led to iolite becoming known as the gemstone of clear vision and associated with more metaphorical interpretations of wayfinding and exploration. Iolite has been used by shamans to open spiritual pathways and clarify intuition, as well as promote detoxification of the body and mind, and to calm the nervous and digestive systems. Iolite is also pleochroic, meaning it appears to be different colors depending on the angle and source of light shone upon it; polarized light especially displays iolite's pleochroism. Iolite is perfect for journeys of self-discovery, protecting you as you wayfind, supporting self-acceptance along the way, and showing you new facets of the situation just as its pleochroism would imply. As a blue stone, iolite is associated with the zodiac signs Libra, Sagittarius and Taurus, and also supports the throat chakra.

Materials & Care
Materials & Care
Mikken Designs always uses natural, unaltered gemstones, unless otherwise indicated.
Over time, the metal components may tarnish or fade. To keep them shining, please store your piece in a jewelry pouch or soft cloth, and avoid direct contact with water (shower, bath, hot tub, sweating) as well as beauty products such as perfume.
To clean, mix a few drops of gentle dish soap and water, and soak for about a minute. Use a soft cloth to gently rub it clean. Ensure you rinse & dry thoroughly.
To clean the mixed metal spacer beads, cover the beads in ketchup (yes!), let sit for a minute, then rinse thoroughly and wipe clean with a soft toothbrush or cloth. You can also clean with mild soap and water, but this may require more patience & a bit more scrubbing. Dry thoroughly.
