About Tanzanite

Rarer than diamonds and almost as famous after only about half a century on the market, tanzanite is believed to facilitate a higher consciousness and stimulate intuition and perception. This exquisite form of zoisite is trichroic, meaning its color changes with every slant of sunlight, ranging in color from a deep ultramarine blue to violet to lighter sapphire hues. Tanzanite is only found in Tanzania’s volcanic Merelani basin at the foot of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. This wide grassy basin has been used by Masai cattle herders for generations, and one fine day in 1962 lightning caused a brushfire here which heated some unassuming brown zoisite pebbles to the right temperature. Soon after, a local Masai cattle herder noticed a lovely blue stone sparkling in the sun, and tanzanite made its debut. The gorgeous blue and violet colors associated with gem-quality tanzanite are achieved by heating the cut and polished stones to 400-500 degrees Celsius. New York jewelers Tiffany and Co actually gave this stone its name "tanzanite" after its country of origin, and declared it one of the most beautiful stones on earth, launching its climb to fame. Due to the intense heat required to elicit its brilliant color, tanzanite is believed to have the ability to bring forth hidden potential in those who wear it. Extending the analogy of profound transformation, tanzanite is said to facilitate harmony, healing, and detoxification in all forms, supporting the dissolution of unhelpful patterns.
